Most fertile agricultural land in Latvia is located in western Zemgale, occupying 39% of the region's area, while the eastern part of the region is covered with forests – 44.1%. Latvia University of Life Sciences and Technologies is located in Zemgale, being the only higher education institution in the country that prepares highly qualified specialists in veterinary medicine, forestry, agriculture, food sciences and rural engineering.
