International security

Euro-Atlantic course and values

Latvia has been a NATO member for 18 years, ensuring international security, especially in light of the recent Russian aggression in Ukraine. Latvia joined NATO in 2004, and at the time, it already had a well-functioning and modern military system. The alliance joining helped to further modernize the army according to the western army standards. Our Minister of Foreign Affairs has called for permanent NATO forces in the Baltics.

Latvia values both freedom and liberty; thus, we are actively contributing to support Ukraine during the unprovoked attack by Russia. Latvia has sent one of the highest amounts of military and other support per capita because we know that democracy, human rights, and sovereignty are priceless. So far, around 33 000 Ukrainian refugees have found safety in Latvia.

Part of the European family

Latvia joined the European Union on the 1st of May, 2004. It ensures many different benefits, such as improved access and reduced costs to capital and beneficial trading and export terms. Our ex-minister of Finance in Latvia, Valdis Dombrovskis, is the Executive Vice-President for 'Economy that works for People' at the European Commission. Latvia’s voice is well-respected and heard on a European level.

We are also part of the eurozone, which means our currency has better security against external monetary shocks. Latvia implemented the euro in 2014.

Safe online and offline

According to the National Cyber Security Index as of December 2023 Latvia ranks 4th (79.17) among 5 countries with the highest scores on the NCSI. The NCSI measures a country’s ability to prevent cyber threats and manage cyber incidents. We have excellent ICT infrastructure and specialists that help to ensure perfect results. The Ministry of Defence is responsible for the Cyber Security Strategy of Latvia which lays down strategic priorities in developing cyber security policy and an accompanying action plan.
