Swisscom plans to invest 20 million euros in Latvia

The Swiss information technology (IT) company "Swisscom" will invest up to 20 million euros in Latvia in the next three years and employ around 300 highly qualified specialists.

The representative of "Swisscom", John de Keijzer, revealed this information at the opening event of the new Swisscom technology centre "DevOps Riga" in "Z-Towers".

The decision on "DevOps Riga" is closely connected to the company's strategy to become one of the leading technology development centres in Europe.

The "DevOps" centre in Riga is the second one that the company has opened outside of Switzerland. The centre opening in Riga is related to Swisscom's long-term strategy to develop its business outside Switzerland and establish one of the leading technology development centres in Europe by 2025.

Many prominent persons and employees of the company attended the opening event, such as the Mayor of Riga Mārtiņš Staķis (PP), the Ambassador of Switzerland to Latvia Martin Michelet, a representative of the Ministry of Economics, and many others.

At the opening event of the centre, the Swiss Ambassador to Latvia Martin Michelet said that Switzerland as a country is heading towards innovation - with very high performance and competitiveness, a leading centre of innovation and technology, including digital and future-oriented technologies.

"The Swisscom technology centre DevOps Riga is an example of the great things that Switzerland and Latvia can do together by combining their strengths. And that is what we need to do to ensure even closer cooperation between Switzerland and Latvia to promote prosperity and mutual benefits, " Martin Michelet said.

John de Keijzer revealed that the "DevOps" centre opening in Riga is a very balanced and well-thought-out decision. The company has set strategically ambitious goals. Within three years, Swisscom plans to invest up to 20 million euros in Latvia, but by 2025 it will provide 300 high-paid jobs in Riga, 95% of which will be for programming engineers.

"As one of the highest values of our company is the employees, various employees will also have access to various education and growth development and motivation programs, which we are currently working on," said John de Keijzer.

Swisscom is one of the best employers in its industry for several years in various ratings. It is due to the various employee support programs implemented in the company. For example, working at Swisscom allows everyone to develop their start-up initiatives, for which the company provides both funding and mentoring support.

Swisscom plans to open Swisscom's DevOps Academy in Riga next year, where people without prior knowledge will learn programming skills. They will also support students by providing 10-15 paid internships in Riga every semester with the opportunity to visit Swisscom offices in Switzerland and the Netherlands. In addition, the company is working to develop a support program for talented computer science students, providing them with motivating scholarships.
