In May 2023, the Digital Security Supervisory Committee of the Ministry of Defence recognised Smart-ID as a qualified electronic identification service. This means that users can use Smart-ID to access their official electronic address (e-address) inbox on the Latvija.gov.lv site. The use of Smart-ID will also expand for access to other state and local government sites and the services therein, where previously Smart-ID was only available to the customers of specific banks.
Inga Bērziņa, Minister for Environmental Protection and Regional Development, explains that trustworthy and easy-to-use digital identification is the first step towards user-friendly access to digital state services and user experience. She is pleased that smart device users can now access state services with Smart-ID — which has proved itself to be trustworthy, secure, and already widely used in society — in addition to eParaksts Mobile, the state service.
“Everyone wins, because when we support several identification tools, our digital service environment becomes more convenient and accessible,” says Bērziņa.
Sanita Meijere, head of the Latvian branch and business relations at SK ID Solutions, emphasises that the integration of Smart-ID — Latvia’s most widely-used authentication tool — into state websites is a significant step towards the accessibility of digital services.
“Convenient and secure confirmation of identity online is no longer a want, but an inalienable need for the digital transformation of society and business. We are pleased that the public will now be able to choose from several secure, highly-trustworthy service alternatives, ensuring uninterrupted access to critically-important services,” says Meijere.
The Ministry of Environmental Protection and Regional Development invites all Smart-ID users to create an e-address to ensure that all state and local council services contact you electronically going forward. An e-address is compulsory for all legal entities as of the 1st January, 2023.
