Smart Electric Technology, an electric vehicle (EV) charging station developer, plans to start building charging stations in Latvia. The company set up a production facility in Latvia in 2020 and has so far installed more than 2000 charging stations of its own design in Estonia, Lithuania, Poland, the USA and other countries.
Kaspars Rožkalns, Director of the Investment and Development Agency of Latvia (LIAA), says that Smart Electric Technology entered Latvia with the support of LIAA and is now preparing for the next stage of investment to bring its technologies to European Union member states and other markets.
“One of the company’s pilot projects will also be implemented in Latvia, bringing electric vehicle charging infrastructure to petrol stations. Smart mobility is one of our priority areas for investment, so we are pleased that the company is continuing its development in Latvia,” said Rožkalns.
When evaluating routes for the company’s future development, Smart Electric Technology chose to base its operations in Latvia where the public is has an awareness of the benefits of electric cars and the need to develop charging infrastructure.
Planning to open subsidiary in USA
“I first got behind the wheel of an electric car in 2014 and continue to drive only electric cars. My family has four cars and they are all electric, so I have a lot of experience with them. When producing the product, I know what an EV driver needs to be comfortable. We have a number of solutions that we would like to bring to Latvia,” says Grigori Sargsyan, founder and CEO of Smart Electric Technology. He wants to ensure that the battery is always charged when a customer gets behind the wheel of their electric car.
“We want to contribute to the development of electric cars so that people are not afraid to switch from traditional cars to electric cars,” says the entrepreneur.
Smart Electric Technology currently employs around 10 people at its production site in Jaunmārupe and plans to recruit more young professionals. The company’s future plans are to open a subsidiary in the USA and to expand into Europe and North America.
Will supply Virši-A petrol stations
This year, Smart Electric Technology won the tender for new charging stations run by petrol and alternative energy trader Virši-A. Under the contract, 28 charging ports with a minimum charging capacity of 150 kW will be installed at 20 stations.
“Together, we will be able to offer new, high-quality and user-friendly charging stations to our community in different regions of Latvia, which is especially important for those who use electric cars on a daily basis,” says Jānis Bethers, Business Development Manager at Virši-A.
Today, more than 3000 of the 700 000 cars on the Latvian market are electric cars. The number of electric cars is expected to grow rapidly in the coming years. Ensuring the availability of infrastructure is one of the first steps to increase this segment. Projections show that by 2030 there could be around 60 000 electric cars in Latvia.
