Neste opens the first contactless self-service store in Latvia

Fuel retailer Neste opens Neste Easy Deli, Latvia’s first self-service store. New concept stores use radio frequency identification (RFID) technology which simultaneously scans all customer’s purchases, for example, through a shopping bag or a backpack.

Last year has changed personal shopping behaviour due to the global Covid-19 pandemic. At the same time, there was a rapid evolution of technologies. Neste Easy Deli combines sustainable solutions with the latest technologies that allow everyone to purchase a healthy meal safely and on the go.

These fully automated stores can be accessed using Neste mobile app, which acts as an entry key. It allows for a fast, easy and, most importantly, safe shopping experience. Purchases can be paid for with a bank card. The stores will have no shopping bags, freshly made takeaway meals will be offered in packaging made of environment-friendly materials, and disposable cups and lids are also made of eco-friendly materials.

“These concept stores will offer the convenience of new, fast, safe and simple shopping experience around the clock, and products are carefully selected to match Neste’s sustainability standards,” explains Armands Beiziķis, SIA Neste Latvija Chairman of the Board.

There will be five such stores in Latvia – two in Riga and one each in Salaspils, Ogre and Tīnūži. Overall investment in the new stores is 500 000 EUR.

Neste Easy Deli is made from sustainable and eco-friendly materials, and its energy consumption was already reduced at the construction stage. Diverse eco-friendly materials are used for the finish – carpets made of recycled plastic and cross-laminated timber (CLT) for load-bearing constructions and interior design. It ensures significantly shorter assembly times and increased fire safety. CLT has environmental efficiency because it absorbs carbon dioxide rather than emits it. Environmental responsibility and sustainable operations are also ensured throughout the selection of producers represented in the stores.
