From Sea Routes to Strategic Growth: Stena Line in Latvia

Stena Line is a strong example of how strategic foreign investment can evolve into a key pillar of regional economic development. Since entering Latvia in 2012, the company has steadily expanded its presence, transforming from a ferry operator into an integral part of the Baltic Sea logistics network.

Today, Stena Line operates two major ferry routes connecting Latvia with Sweden and Germany – Ventspils – Nynäshamn and Liepāja–Travemünde. Over time, the company has significantly increased capacity by introducing modern vessels such as Stena Horizon, Stena Flavia, Stena Baltica, and Stena Scandica. These investments have been closely aligned with growing demand for both passenger and freight transport, while strengthening Latvia’s connectivity to key European markets.A major milestone in the company’s development has been its expansion into port operations. In 2023 and 2025, Stena Line acquired terminal operations in Ventspils and Liepāja, creating a complementary port network that enhances efficiency and supports increasingly complex supply chains. Today, these terminals serve as important gateways supports increasingly complex supply chains. Today, these terminals serve as important gateways for RoRo-traffic, passengers, as well for general, bulk cargo and  containers, ensuring seamless connections with major industrial and distribution centres across Europe.

As Liene Lemane, Trade Director of Business Region Baltic Sea North at Stena Line, emphasises:
“We focus on efficiency, quality of services, strengthening safety culture, and contributing to long-term economic resilience in Latvia and the wider region.”

This long-term mindset is also reflected in the company’s overall investment experience in Latvia, which has been consistently positive. Stena Line highlights the country’s strategic location, access to the European Union market, and openness to international business as key advantages. Strong institutional support and constructive cooperation with local authorities have further reinforced a stable environment for growth.

At the same time, the company operates in a complex environment shaped by energy costs, competition for talent, and geopolitical uncertainty. Rather than limiting growth, these challenges are addressed through careful planning, resilience-focused decision-making, and close collaboration with local and international partners.

Innovation plays a central role in Stena Line’s operations. The company continuously invests in digital solutions such as Smart Gate systems and AI-supported Voyage Optimisation tools to improve efficiency, safety, and environmental performance. These technologies enable more effective port operations, optimise transport flows, and enhance the overall customer experience.

Looking ahead, Stena Line plans to further strengthen its presence in Latvia while using it as a strategic base for expansion across the Baltic region. Future development will focus on improving ferry services, enhancing terminal operations, and continuing investments in people and technology.

Latvia’s strategic position, well-developed transport infrastructure, and skilled workforce make it a compelling destination for long-term investment. As demonstrated by Stena Line, companies that commit to the market with a long-term vision can build resilient, efficient, and future-oriented operations that contribute meaningfully to European trade and connectivity.
