Experts to establish sustainable transport and mobility policy guidelines

To discuss future transport and mobility through the lens of innovation, cooperation and education, as well as to agree on sustainable transport policy guidelines, the Look at the Future of Mobility: Innovations, Education and Collaboration conference will gather industry leaders and policy makers at RTU on November 8.

Swedish Ambassador to Latvia Karin Höglund, Transport Minister Kaspars Briškens and RTU Rector Tālis Juhna will open the conference, during which Latvian and foreign experts will discuss the future of cargo transportation and logistics, as well as the development of passenger transportation, paying close attention to the challenges of both railways and micro mobility. A separate session will be devoted to civil-military logistics, which is a new field in Latvia and has yet to be discussed at any great lengths.

After each session, experts, among whom Pasažieru vilciens chairman Rodžers Jānis Grigalis, Riga City Executive Director Jānis Lange, Latvenergo board chairman Mārtiņš Čakste, Stena Line freight transportation commercial director Vladimirs Ščavinskis, Ministry of the Interior parliamentary secretary Igors Rajevs, and Federation of Latvian Security and Defense Industries board chairman Elīna Egle-Ločmele and several other influential industry representatives will create a comprehensive policy framework for the energy-efficient and sustainable development of transport and logistics.

In the field of passenger and freight transport, a road map will be developed for the development of sustainable urban mobility solutions, the use of electric trains and the promotion of regional mobility using integrated transport networks, the improvement of safety in micro mobility, as well as the promotion of public-private partnership in the field of mobility solutions.

In addition, the intent of the civil-military policy framework is to increase the importance of mobility in crisis management, promote the development of a unified civil logistics system for quick response, widen the availability of resources for responding to crises, and steer the formation of a strong partnership between the state and the private sector, as well to build cooperation in the field of civil and military logistics.

After the conference, the policy guidelines will be submitted to the responsible ministries.

The Look at the Future of Mobility: Innovations, Education and Collaboration is organised by the Department of International Economic Relations, and the RTU Transport Economics and Logistics Department of the Faculty of Engineering Economics, and RTU Management, with the support of the Swedish Institute.
