airBaltic first in the world to link top-tier loyalty programme membership with NFTs

Soon, airBaltic Club loyalty programme members will be able to qualify for top-tier VIP status in exchange for owning 25 Planies – the airline’s non-fungible token (NFT) collectables. The status will be granted for one year or as long as the 25 Planies are being staked on the staking platform.

airBaltic launched Planies in October 2022, becoming the world’s first airline to offer an NFT-based loyalty programme, wrote Labs of Latvia. By late November, the airline had already issued over 2300 of the tokens, Labs of Latvia reported.

Martin Gauss, CEO of airBaltic, says of the latest update: “We have seen a high interest in our NFTs so far, and now we are taking the next step in implementing it in various processes within the airline. airBaltic is committed to providing its customers with a memorable and luxurious travel experience, and this addition of the loyalty programme is another new and creative way how to reach that.”

The VIP status will be linked with respective tokens and an airBaltic Club account. By staking no less than 25 Planies, a member will receive the VIP status automatically. Each airBaltic Club member qualifies for such status once only.

airBaltic Club is a loyalty programme, via which passengers earn loyalty points and collect stamps while travelling and receive various rewards.

Planies are digital collectible NFTs, each of them consisting of a unique cartoon artwork of an aircraft with different traits. A total of 10 000 unique Planies will be issued on the dedicated website www.planiesnft.com, wrote Labs of Latvia. After the initial sales (minting), it will be possible to collect or trade them on the OpenSea marketplace.

airBaltic is well known as an airline of innovation among global carriers. In 2014, the company became the first airline in the world to accept Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies to purchase flight tickets. Later in 2021, airBaltic became the first airline to issue NFTs.
