Advancing sustainable development: second biorefinery memorandum meeting

On November 27, 2024, the second meeting of Biorefinery Memorandum participants took place, reaffirming the commitment of stakeholders to promote sustainable development, innovation, and scientific achievements in the field of bio-refining in Latvia. This memorandum, officially signed on June 18, 2024, serves as a strong foundation for fostering national and international collaboration to efficiently manage and utilize biomass, delivering high-value solutions and products.

This time, the participants had a unique opportunity to explore the achievements of the Latvian State Institute of Wood Chemistry (LSIWC). The institute shared its expertise by presenting various scientific studies and commercialization ideas related to biomass processing. Prior to the presentation, attendees were given a tour of the institute's state-of-the-art scientific laboratories, which form a crucial base for developing and advancing innovations. The institute’s activities clearly demonstrate Latvia's readiness to offer globally competitive solutions based on advanced technologies and the smart use of natural resources.

An important contribution to the meeting was made by the international consulting company “Spinverse”, which delivered a presentation on current EU programs and funding opportunities. The presentation aimed to support participants in preparing for successful participation in these programs, which could significantly accelerate the implementation of innovative projects.

Several important meetings have already been successfully held under the framework of the Biorefinery Memorandum. For instance, the first participant meeting took place on August 22, with the aim of defining specific next steps for implementing the initiatives outlined in the memorandum. Additionally, on September 12, a separate meeting was organized for state institutions, highlighting the high level of interest and responsibility in advancing the memorandum’s goals on a national scale.

Looking ahead, two more participant meetings are planned for February and March 2025, which promise to be equally significant. These meetings aim to further strengthen cooperation between representatives from science, business, and the public sector to collectively implement initiatives based on the principles of sustainability and the circular economy.

This meeting not only reaffirmed the participants' commitment but also emphasized the crucial role of collaboration between science, business, and public administration. The Biorefinery Memorandum is evolving into a platform where ideas transform into real solutions, significantly contributing to the sustainable development of both Latvia and the global community.
